A Ludlow cemetery could be extended.

The site off Henley Road, which opened in 1914, has limited remaining burial capacity. However, the increasing demand for burial plots, projected population growth, and anticipated long-term community needs mean that all the land needs to be put into active use.

During 2025/26, there have been 30 burials and 20 interments of cremated remains at the cemetery. That is more than during 2024/25, and 2023/24.

A comprehensive groundwater risk assessment has been carried out to evaluate pollution risks from a proposed extension that considered geological, hydrogeological, and environmental factors.

It concluded that the site is suitable for burial and development, with low flood, groundwater, and geological risks, that was supported by comprehensive environmental data and regulatory compliance.

The town clerk, Gina Wilding provided the council’s services committee with a report, stating that bringing the last piece of unused land for burials is a necessary step to meet the long-term needs of Ludlow residents.

She included a checklist of steps to assist with the process.

The committee approved the report, including an initial layout drawing to give them an idea of what is possible within the small space.

When the drawing is ready, a consultation will be held with neighbours and other stakeholders to get their feedback.
