Monmouth School for Boys' 1st XI opened the new season in The SWIS (South-West Independent Schools) League with a hard-fought home draw against Clifton College.

Monmouth started to gain control after a frantic and scrappy opening 20 minutes before deservedly taking the lead.

A clinical finish by Hugo Lawson found the back of the Clifton net after a pinpoint cross from Cian Davies was headed superbly into his path by Henry Hurle.

Monmouth played the better football throughout the game with some neat exchanges and strong running pleasing Mr Mark Tamplin, the Master in Charge of Football.

However, Clifton refused to give up and salvaged a draw in the closing minutes when they breached the Monmouth defence to score an equaliser.

It’s a platform on which Monmouth’s players can build and they are scheduled to travel to Malvern College in their next fixture in The SWIS League on Saturday 5th February.

Meanwhile, Monmouth’s 2nd XI slipped to a 3-0 defeat against Clifton and the 3rd XI were beaten 3-1, but there was much better news for the Under-16 A team, who stormed to a 7-0 win.

The under-16s played some tremendous football and were delighted to score seven goals while keeping the Clifton strikers at bay throughout the match.
