2gether NHS Foundation Trust is supporting Dementia Awareness Week, which takes place this week, from 14-20 May.
The week, which is organised by the Alzheimer’s Society, aims to raise awareness and offer help and understanding of dementia. This year the Alzheimer’s Society would like everyone to unite and take action against dementia.
Dementia is a common condition, and the risk of developing it increases as you get older. The condition normally appears in people over the age of 65.
There is no simple test for dementia and many of its symptoms occur with other conditions, which can make diagnosing dementia more difficult. However, early diagnosis is crucial in helping people to receive the treatment and support they require to live well with dementia.
Jill Jones, Team Manager, Memory Services Herefordshire, 2gether NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Timely diagnosis and post-diagnostic support can be beneficial as it provides people with the opportunity and time to understand dementia, learn ways to manage symptoms and consider future decisions and support.
If you are concerned about your memory, then please speak to your doctor and they can refer you to our services.”
Dementia is a syndrome, associated with an ongoing decline of the brain and its abilities. This includes problems with:
• Memory loss
• Thinking speed
• Mental agility
• Language
• Understanding
• Judgement
