Pressure will be put on highways chiefs to introduce a 20mph speed limit outside all schools in the Forest of Dean, according to civic chiefs.

Forest of Dean District Council chiefs said yesterday they would lobby Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) so as to make it safe for parents and children during drop off and pick up times.

They made this pledge when cabinet discussed the future of the Cinderford Northern Quarter redevelopment after questions were asked about the possibility of bringing in a 20mph speed limit outside Steam Mills Primary School.

Councillor Nicky Packer (G, Newnham) said: “The report recommends lobbying for a reduced speed limit through Steam Mills but only if a new route for the spine road or moving the school to the Cinderford Northern Quarter are not viable.

“Looking at these options could take a long time. Would the cabinet consider lobbying GCC for a lower speed limit through Steam Mills now rather than waiting for those things to happen.”

Councillor Tim Gwilliam (I, Berry Hill) said: “We are happy to begin lobbying county council highways that all school zones should be 20mph furring drop of and pick up times.”

Cllr Gwilliam said the council liaise with county council to request a 20mph speed limit outside the current school.

He also said the council would begin discussions to find out whether all Forest of Dean schools should have an automatic 20mph zone outside their gates during the school times.
