A former Gloucester mayor who used to hold her surgeries in the fitting rooms of C&A clothing store has been congratulated for her 30 years of service.

Westgate councillor Pam Tracey says she feels the same as when she became a councillor all those years ago and thanked everyone she’s worked with over the years.

She received a round of applause at Gloucestershire County Council this week.

And she told councillors how she has never had a day off in her life and that being an elected representative is all about serving the community.

“I don’t feel I’ve done 30 years. I’ve got to say thank you to the people I’ve worked with.

“I was a C&A girl, I still am. When they asked me to stand for council in 1989 we had this housing crisis.

“I had to ask my employer and they gave me the OK. And so I worked for C&A and the fitting rooms were my surgery.

“And they were really good, the girls, they never twitted or anything. They said Pam somebody rang up about a dress we’ve got in stock. I said what is it? She said housing. I said cover me.

“I never had a day off. I’ve never had a day off in my life working. We worked together all our interest was to help the people of Gloucestershire and our wonderful city of Gloucester.

“And if you smile and you enjoy it, you’ll keep doing it. It is hard going sometimes when you can’t win it all. But I don’t feel any different.

“At the end of the day it’s about that man up there and the people who put the cross by your name. Thank you all.”
