Former Gloucester City Council leader Paul James says he is very pleased to be sheriff Pam Tracey’s consort for the remainder of the civic year.

Mr James, had been councillor for 24 years, before he decided not stand for re-election at the last local elections.

But he now makes a return to civic life after the recent election of Councillor Tracey (Con, Westgate) as the new sheriff and deputy mayor.

He said his return to public life would be minor and temporary but he was pleased to do so.

“It was unexpected, I got the call from Pam asking if I would be her consort for the rest of the year,” he said.

“It’s not in the circumstances I would have wanted to come into it with the resignation of Clive Walford who I worked with very closely as the Longlevens councillor for many years.

“We are where we are and I’m sure Pam, having spent a year in the civic office with her when she was was mayor and I was sheriff in 2002/03, will do a great job.

“Pam takes her responsibilities very seriously and it will be a very lively and active period ahead as it was then.”

Mr James said he would be accompanying the sheriff to civic events.

“And doing what she tells me to which is what I’ve been doing for the last 25 years anyway,” he said.
