Gloucester City councillors will debate plans to build up to 150 homes in Kingsway next week.

Robert Hitchens Limited wants to develop 14.3 acres of land north of Rudloe Drive.

The land forms part of the wider former RAF Quedgeley site that has now been substantially redeveloped.

Consultants working on the scheme say it is a highly sustainable site which provides travel choices for residents with good bus connections nearby.

Planning officers agree that the development would make a contribution to the housing land supply and would also bring economic benefits.

But they say the proposals do not provide affordable housing for people who cannot afford to rent or buy homes which are currently on the market.

Councillors will give their views on the proposals next week but the decision to grant or refuse permission for the scheme will be down to a planning inspector.

Robert Hitchins Ltd lodged an appeal after the city council failed to determine the plans within the statutory period and a planning inquiry is scheduled for August 10.

The developer’s planning statement says the new development would increase the supply of housing at the main urban centre in line with the Gloucester, Cheltenham and Tewkesbury joint core strategy.

“The site is suitable, available and deliverable for housing, and has the capacity for up to 150 dwellings (including much needed affordable housing) to help support the authorities five-year housing land supply,” the planning statement reads.

“The site is situated within close proximity to existing services and facilities including public transport, schools, retail facilities, the existing employment opportunities of Waterwells Business Park and a newly consented medical centre and pharmacy.”

Gloucester City Council’s planning committee will debate the plans at their 6pm meeting on June 8.
