Rare black truffle grown in Monmouthshire

An expensive Mediterranean black truffle has been cultivated in the UK for the first time.

The Perigord variety is found mostly in northern Spain, southern France and northern Italy.

Now researchers think what started out as a fungus in a Mediterranean oak tree was able to be harvested in Monmouthshire because of climate change.

It was grown as part of a project run by truffle firm Mycorrhizal Systems Ltd (MSL) and it was harvested in March 2017 by a trained dog named Bella.

The truffle has been preserved, but future produce will be distributed to restaurants.
