Remain alliance would be perverse, says Labour candidate

A Labour Party general election candidate believes joining a Remain alliance in Herefordshire would be perverse.

Anna Coda, who is contesting the Hereford and South Herefordshire seat, believes anti-Tory voters should back her party as they finished second in the last elections.

In 2017, she received 11,991 ahead of former Hereford mayor Jim Kenyon, the Liberal Democrat Lucy Hurds, Diana Toynbee of the Greens and UKIP’s Gwyn Price.

“As Liberal Democrats and Greens are both standing candidates in Hereford and South Herefordshire no alliance exists,” she said.

“It would be perverse of Labour to join an alliance which is anti-Conservative in some seats like Brecon, but anti-Labour in others like Stroud.

“The Lib Dems have said that they will not support a Labour minority government should that be the outcome of the general election.

“Given the result of the last two general elections in Hereford and South Herefordshire Labour should be the obvious beneficiary of the anti-Tory vote.

“This decision should be left to the electorate at the ballot box and not based on a cynical single issue alliance between parties with largely conflicting policies.”

Ms Coda also stood to represent the Golden Valley North ward in the May council elections.

She finished last on that occasion with 141 votes.
