Man jailed for eight years for causing death by dangerous driving

A 49-year-old man from the Ebbw Vale area has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for causing death by dangerous driving.

Neil Brooks was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court, having been found guilty at trial, of the offences of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The road traffic collision took place on King Street, Brynmawr, around 12.25am on Wednesday 26th July 2017. 20-year-old Sophie Brimble from Crickhowell was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

Mr Brooks was sentenced to eight years imprisonment and disqualified from driving for five years, commencing the day of his release.

PC Darren Sullivan of Gwent Police’s Collision Investigation department was the officer in this case. He said;

“Today is the conclusion of a long and difficult investigation and the sentence reflects the view of the Court regarding the actions of the driver and the part he played in this tragedy.

"Our thoughts remain with the family of Sophie Brimble, who sadly lost her life in this collision. I would like to personally thank the Brimble family for the patience, understanding and integrity, they have shown throughout the investigation and subsequent Court case.

“I would also like to thank those, who came forward and gave evidence in the case.

“A young lady needlessly lost her life that night. I only hope that it serves as reminder to everyone, of the consequences of dangerous driving on our roads.”
