The Brexit Party is looking to field candidates in future elections in Herefordshire.

The Eurosceptic group led by Nigel Farage topped the polls in the county during the May European Parliament elections with the support of more than 21,000 local voters.
And now Woolhope’s Matt Slocombe, the party coordinator for Herefordshire, says they must keep up the pressure to ensure the UK leaves the European Union on October 31.

To do so, the Brexit Party is looking to field candidates to contest parliamentary elections up and down the country, including in the county’s two constituencies.

Matt, who had previously always supported the Conservative and Unionist Party, said he was fed up of the broken promises.

“I was a true blue dyed-in-the-wool Conservative,” he said.

“But I was fed up of being lied to.

“We were told 108 times that we were leaving the EU on the 29 of March and we still haven’t left.

“There was Theresa May’s Mansion House speech where you get all this talk that no deal is better than a bad deal and you think brilliant, Theresa is back.

“Fantastic, we’ve got another Iron Lady Mark II.

“But then EU negotiator Michel Barnier summoned our Prime Minister and there was talk of compromise. What PM is allowing that to happen?

“No, you don’t comprise with the sovereignty of the United Kingdom.

“You forge a path and you tell them where you are going and you get it done.”

Matt says the party is so popular locally that he has already had interest from councillors who are looking to join its ranks.

He said the party is selecting its candidates to contest constituency seats nationwide and that he would be delighted to stand in Herefordshire.

“I offered my support to the Brexit Party and was asked to coordinate Hereford for them,” he said.

During the EU referendum in 2016, 59.2% of local voters backed Leave while 40.8% voted Remain.
